USP Compounding Standards
The pharmacopeia chapters governing how compounded medications must be prepared — the quality floor state boards enforce.
The United States Pharmacopeia writes the technical rulebook compounding operates under: chapters governing non-sterile preparation, sterile preparation (the demanding one — clean rooms, air quality, sterility testing, beyond-use dating), and hazardous-drug handling. State boards of pharmacy enforce them; "required to meet USP compounding standards" in a disclosure refers to exactly this framework.
Honest calibration: USP compliance is a meaningful quality floor — trained personnel, tested processes, contamination controls — and still not equivalent to FDA approval of a manufactured drug, which adds clinical trials and product-level review. Both facts belong in view at once, which is why our compounded-product disclosures state the standards and the non-approval side by side rather than letting either stand in for the other.
This glossary entry is general information, not medical advice, and is written to be consistent with FDA prescribing information and primary trial publications as of its last review. Always consult a licensed healthcare provider for personal medical decisions.
