Rybelsus
The first oral semaglutide brand, FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes — proof that a GLP-1 peptide could survive as a tablet.
Rybelsus, approved in 2019, broke the rule that peptide drugs must be injected. Using the SNAC absorption enhancer, it delivers semaglutide as a daily tablet taken on an empty stomach — the formulation breakthrough that later enabled oral semaglutide for weight management.
Its approval is type 2 diabetes at 7 mg and 14 mg doses, so weight-focused use of Rybelsus itself is off-label and its studied weight effects at those doses are modest. Its real significance for weight patients is as the ancestor of the Wegovy pill: same molecule, same empty-stomach ritual, with the weight-management program built on higher, purpose-studied dosing.
